Teaching Beyond "Normal"

Addressing Neurodiversity in the Classroom

The issue of neurodiversity - the idea that atypical neurological development is a normal human difference and that these differences exist on a continuum of normal behavior - has risen to the forefront of education in recent years.

While including children of all learning styles and abilities is a goal in most classrooms, the reality is that this presents an enormous challenge for educators.

In an effort to provide educators, parents, and community members with a first hand view of neurodiversity as well as an overview of concepts and strategies to help educators and parents alike, Sewall is hosting a day-long conference on addressing neurodiversity in the classroom on July 31, 2009.  This event will feature a keynote address and afternoon session by self-advocate and author, Jonathan Mooney (www.jonathanmooney.com), who will provide an insightful and humorous look at the 21st century approach addressing cognitive differences.

We would like to invite you to take part in this important discussion.  Below are links to Adobe versions of a flyer with more information about the event as well as the registration form.  Additional information will be added as we get closer to the event.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please e-mail Katherine Rains at katherinerains@yahoo.com or call Heidi Heissenbuttel at 303-399-1800.
